ABOUT US
We at SheCanSTEM strive to engage more women in the fields of STEM by inclusively empowering the next generation of female leaders. We wish to create an encouraging environment for these like-minded girls, while breaking stereotypical gender barriers that exist in today's society.
Our hackathon is a 3-day event that is packed with exciting STEM-related activities, including a variety of workshops and panels. Female and non-binary students in high school or undergraduate programs will be able to network, meet new people, and compete for prizes. Furthermore, this hackathon will also help participants explore their passions for STEM, whilst aiding them in becoming important members of the future workforce.

FAQ
WHAT IS A HACKATHON?
Our hackathon will be an enriching, activity-packed event where you will be able to bond with other women interested in tech while making connections and creating ground-breaking projects; and don’t forget the possibility of winning a prize!
DO I NEED A TEAM?
While you are welcome to participate alone, we strongly encourage that you form a team even if you don’t know anyone at the hackathon! By forming a team you would be meeting other young women with similar interests as you while building more connections in the world of STEM, which would be extremely rewarding.
If you don't have a team and would like one, don't worry - we'll have ways you can meet many new potential teammates throughout the 3 days.
HOW DO I FIND A TEAM IF I DON'T HAVE ONE?
You will have plenty of opportunities to form a team throughout the first day or two, like through our team formation channel or team formation activities we will be hosting. Through these opportunities, you’ll be able to introduce yourself and learn about others in order to meet and team up with other girls who have similar interests as you in order to work together to create your project over the weekend!
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN BE ON A TEAM?
Teams have to contain 1-4 people in order to be eligible to win prizes.
DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO CODE?
Nope! Any female/non-binary student will be able to participate no matter how much previous coding knowledge they have. This hackathon is meant to serve as a fun learning experience, so we hope that beginners and pros alike will be able to walk out with some more knowledge and connections at the end of the weekend!
WHAT WILL I NEED?
You will only need a computer (or any other software that is necessary to develop your project). Some stable WiFi connection would also be beneficial, and then you’re all set to go! We'll be using Discord and Zoom throughout the weekend, so if you want, you can download those too. (Some workshops will require additional software, but we'll let you know more details later!)
HOW WILL MENTORING WORK?
There will be tech mentors available throughout the whole weekend if you ever need help or guidance. You’ll be able to request them and communicate through Discord or video call if needed. More information about mentor bios can be found on Discord.
WHAT ARE TRACKS?
These are different categories that you can create your project around and can also be used as guidance or inspiration. Our 3 tracks for this hackathon are social, personal, and environmental, in addition to our sponsor challenges, (which will give you the opportunity to win special prizes and perks offered by the sponsor hosting the challenge).
DO I NEED TO SUBMIT TO A TRACK?
You don’t need to submit your project to a track and will still be eligible for overall prizes, however, if you do, you’ll have the opportunity to win a track-specific prize.
WILL THERE BE SWAG?
Unfortunately, this year, we cannot give out physical swag; however, we will have hundreds of dollars worth of virtual freebies to distribute to participants!
